Questionnaire studies have shown that symptoms indicative of mental disorders are common among active and retired elite footballers. These conditions are caused by a combination of biological, psychological and social stressors and might be enhanced by specific factors such as public attention and fame and repeated head trauma.

In a recent study with 74 male current professional football players from the top two English leagues, 22% reported lifestyle issues that would normally lead to an occupational therapy referral. This includes low well-being and a lack of meaning in one’s life.

Furthermore, it was found that a higher level of psychological resilience (i.e., the ability to cope with adversity) was associated with fewer sport-related distress, sleep disturbance, and alcohol misuse symptoms. In fact, for every unit increase in psychological resilience, the odds of reporting these symptoms decreased by 9%, 14% and 23% respectively. These results support the notion that a comprehensive approach is necessary for the prevention and management of MHS in footballers. Several tools exist to recognize symptoms of MHS early on, making it possible for a multidisciplinary team to treat and educate footballers in order to improve their quality of life and coping behaviour as well as enhance psychological resilience.
